Access Issues in Powell River

Powell River like many other towns with a climbing area has access issues, weather it is an issue with access on or over private land, or access within land licensed to a logging company.  Local climbers work to build good relationships to minimize the conflicts with land owners and logging companies and maintain the privilege of access to the crags for everyone.  Climbers must all preserve and protect access weather we live in the area or not. Please have some respect and don't be the cause of lost access.

Stillwater and Moss Mountain Access

October 1 2016

There are currently several sensitive access issues in the Stillwater area that people need to be aware. The trail to the cliffs and beach, cuts across private lands, and local homeowners ask only a few courtesies from us to continue allowing us to use these trails.

1.) Trail access to Moss Mountain from Loubert Road;  Parking for this access is by the red mail box on the corner of Stillwater Rd and Loubert Rd only, DO NOT drive to the end of Stillwater School Rd and park.  If you have dogs with you be sure to KEEP THEM ON LEASH until you're well past the house at the end of Stillwater School road so there is no conflict with the resident dogs.  The homeowners are very nice people who graciously allow people to cross their property to access the beautiful Stillwater beaches, please respect this access.

2.) Trail access to The Stacks from Hollingsworth Rd;  Parking for this trail is extremely limited! Please

DO NOT park where you are blocking driveways, if there are 3 cars already parked at the end of Hollingsworth road

please park closer to Stillwater Rd and walk in.  If you have dogs with you be sure to KEEP THEM ON LEASH until you are well into the trails to reduce conflict with resident dogs.

The Stillwater trail network is very old and well used by many people, it has some very beautiful rock cairns and stone benches overlooking the water.  It also has some of the most delicate and deep moss patches I have ever seen, remember, it is everyone's responsibility to preserve the beauty and history of this special place.

Higgyland Access Issues

March 1 2017

Higgyland is a high profile popular sport climbing  area located on private land where there are no current conflicts between the climbers and land owners.  Currently there is an easement for the Sunshine Coast Trail close along the base of the cliff, however the bluff is not included.  Local climbers ask that you be curious when interacting with people on the trail, you could be speaking with the land owners.

1.)  Parking:  A very limited amount of parking is available at the end of the narrow gravel road and some additional pullouts along the side can be found.  For further parking please use the upper parking area, at the top of the hill before entering the narrow road turn sharp left and park in the lot overlooking the lower gravel parking area. See the overview map for Higgyland

2.)  Bathroom Facilities: There are no bathroom facilities close to the cliffs this is of particular concern due to the proximity to the lake.  If you require facilities you can go to the Shingle Mill Pub, it is not far.  Please don't leave camp flowers the area is too heavily used for them to go un noticed.
